フレキシブルオフィス WeWork を日本国内で展開するWWJ株式会社（本社：東京都港区、代表取締役社長 兼 CEO：熊谷 慶太郎、以下「WeWork Japan*¹」）は、北海道初となる拠点「WeWork THE VILLAGE SAPPORO」を2026年5月1日にオープンし、5月21日にオープニングセレモニーを開催しました。

本拠点は、地下鉄「さっぽろ駅」徒歩2分、地下鉄「大通駅」徒歩4分、JR「札幌駅」徒歩6分で、チ・カ・ホ（札幌駅前通地下歩行空間）直結という好立地の新築オフィスビル「THE VILLAGE SAPPORO」内に誕生しました。スタートアップや大企業、自治体など多様な入居メンバーが交わる WeWork のコミュニティにより、札幌市のAI・スタートアップ共創エコシステム形成を目指します。また、WeWork がプロデュースするビル共用ラウンジ「THE LOUNGE by WeWork」の空間も活用し、業界や企業の垣根を越えたコラボレーションやイノベーション創出の場を提供します。

オープニングセレモニーには、札幌市長の秋元克広氏、ソフトバンク株式会社（以下「ソフトバンク」）、WeWork の入居メンバーであり、北海道での事業展開にも取り組む起業家かつ元プロ野球選手の斎藤佑樹氏、そしてビルオーナーであるいちご地所株式会社、WeWork Japan が登壇。札幌におけるスタートアップ支援やAIの社会実装、地域コミュニティ形成の未来について議論が交わされました。

イベント冒頭では、THE VILLAGE SAPPOROのオーナーであるいちご地所株式会社の代表取締役社長 細野康英氏が、「THE VILLAGE SAPPORO」を通して、入居企業同士がつながり、新たなビジネスや共創が生まれる空間を目指すと説明。ビルパートナーである WeWork と共に、札幌に新たなコミュニティ型オフィス文化を根付かせていきたいと語りました。

続いて、WeWork Japan 代表取締役社長 兼 CEO 熊谷慶太郎は、WeWork の価値について、「創造性を刺激するワークスペース」「オールインクルーシブなサービス」「コミュニティによる共創」の3点を紹介。年間約3,000回のイベント開催や、年間約300件のビジネスマッチング創出実績にも触れながら、「WeWork THE VILLAGE SAPPORO」を中核として、札幌から世界へ広がる共創エコシステムを構築していく考えを示しました。

また、札幌市との連携をさらに強化しながら、スタートアップ創出と地域コミュニティ活性化を加速していく方針も発表しました。

来賓として登壇した札幌市長の秋元克広氏は、北海道・札幌が、観光や食に加え、半導体・AIデータセンターなど新たな産業集積でも注目を集めていることに言及。その上で、「WeWork が持つネットワークやコミュニティ形成のノウハウを通して、北海道・札幌から世界へ向けて新たな価値を発信してほしい」と期待を寄せました。

また、2025年11月に締結した WeWork Japan との連携協定にも触れながら、行政としてもスタートアップ支援や地域活性化を後押ししていく考えを示しました。

イベントでは、今年4月に発表された、多様な企業が参加する WeWork Japan のコミュニティと、ソフトバンクのAIスタートアップ向けの支援プログラム「AI Foundation for Startups」（AIFS）を組み合わせて、AIスタートアップの事業成長を加速させるプロジェクト「AI Foundation Community」（AIFC）についても紹介されました。

WeWork Japan 代表取締役社長 兼 CEO 熊谷慶太郎は、AIFCについて「ソフトバンクが提供するAIFSによる事業支援と、WeWork のコミュニティを掛け合わせることで、スタートアップ単独では実現が難しい大企業・自治体との接点を生み出し、事業実装やスケールアップを支援する」と説明。

ソフトバンク 次世代事業開発本部 本部長 淺沼邦光氏は、ソフトバンクの成長戦略「Activate AI for Society」について説明し、北海道・苫小牧で進むAIデータセンター構想やAI計算基盤の整備に触れながら、「データセンターを作るだけではなく、実際にAIを活用する企業との接点を作ることが重要」と強調しました。

続いて行われたトークセッションでは、「AIスタートアップとコミュニティが札幌にもたらす力」をテーマに、札幌市・ソフトバンク・WeWork Japan の3者が、北海道・札幌におけるAIスタートアップ支援と、今後のエコシステム形成について議論を交わしました。

札幌市 経済観光局  経済戦略推進部 プロジェクト担当部長 工藤一也氏は、北海道が持つ再生可能エネルギーの供給力や広大な土地、AIデータセンターや半導体関連産業の集積など、AI時代における地域ポテンシャルについて説明。さらに、2024年に国から「GX／AI金融資産運用特区」に認定されたことにも触れながら、札幌・北海道を「AI実装と新産業創出の拠点」として成長させていきたいと語りました。

また、札幌市内ではこの10年間で約30万平米の新たなオフィス供給が予定されていることから、「新しいオフィス空間を活用しながら、挑戦する企業やスタートアップが集まる都市を目指したい」とし、WeWork やビルオーナーとの連携への期待を示しました。

ソフトバンク 次世代事業開発本部 本部長 淺沼邦光氏は、WeWork コミュニティのような“つながる場”を通して、AIの社会実装を札幌・北海道から加速していきたいと語りました。

さらに、「これからはPoC（実証実験）の段階から“実装”のフェーズへ移行していく時代」とした上で、札幌・北海道発のスタートアップが日本全国、そしてグローバルに成長していける環境づくりへの期待を述べました。

WeWork Japan 代表取締役社長 兼 CEO 熊谷慶太郎は、「WeWork 最大の価値はコミュニティ」としたうえで、北海道においてスタートアップ、大企業、自治体など多様なプレイヤーが交わる“共創の中心地”を形成していく考えを説明。

また、WeWork が持つグローバルネットワークや、多様な企業・団体とのつながりを活用することで、「スタートアップ単独では難しいことでも、コミュニティの力によってより大きくスケールアップできる」と語りました。最後に、「まずは札幌の地にしっかり根付き、今日お越しいただいた皆様との関係を一つひとつ築いていきたい」と述べ、地域コミュニティと共に札幌発のイノベーションを育てていく姿勢を示しました。

イベントの最後には、WeWork 入居メンバーでもあり、北海道で事業展開を行う起業家・元プロ野球選手の斎藤佑樹氏が登壇。

現在進めている「子どもたちサイズの野球場」プロジェクトや、北海道における地域コミュニティづくりについて紹介しながら、「これからの北海道は、スポーツや観光だけでなく、“ビジネスでも成長できる場所”にしていきたい」と語りました。また、「WeWork のようなコミュニティがハブとなることで、北海道から新しいつながりや価値が生まれていく未来を楽しみにしている」とコメントし、会場を盛り上げました。

その後行われた記念始球式では、北海道で挑戦を続けてきた斎藤氏から、これから北海道で新たなコミュニティづくりに挑む WeWork Japan 熊谷へとボールが手渡されました。会場は大きな拍手と熱気に包まれ、札幌から始まる新たな挑戦を象徴する印象的なセレモニーとなりました。

WeWork Japan は、「WeWork THE VILLAGE SAPPORO」を通じて、スタートアップ、大企業、自治体、地域コミュニティが交差する“共創のハブ”を札幌に形成していきます。

今後も札幌市やパートナー企業との連携を深めながら、北海道から新たな挑戦やイノベーションが生まれる環境づくりを推進し、札幌から全国、そして世界へ広がるスタートアップ・エコシステムの形成を目指してまいります。

WWJ Corp. (“WeWork Japan *¹”), the operator of WeWork’s flexible workspace business in Japan, officially opened WeWork THE VILLAGE SAPPORO, its first Hokkaido location, on May 1, 2026. An opening ceremony was held on May 21 to mark the launch.

Located inside THE VILLAGE SAPPORO, a newly developed office building in central Sapporo, the new WeWork location offers outstanding accessibility: two minutes on foot from Sapporo Subway Station, four minutes from Odori Station, six minutes from JR Sapporo Station, and direct access to Chi-Ka-Ho, the city’s underground pedestrian walkway.

Through WeWork’s community, where startups, enterprises, local governments, and regional partners come together, WeWork THE VILLAGE SAPPORO aims to support the growth of a co-creation ecosystem for AI and startups in Sapporo. THE LOUNGE by WeWork, a shared lounge space produced by WeWork, will also serve as a hub for collaboration and innovation across industries and organizations.

The opening ceremony brought together Sapporo Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto, SoftBank Corp., Ichigo Estate Co., Ltd., entrepreneur and former professional baseball player Yuki Saito, who is also a WeWork member, and WeWork Japan. The speakers discussed how Sapporo can strengthen startup support, accelerate real-world AI adoption, and build a community-driven innovation ecosystem.

At the start of the ceremony, Yasuhide Hosono, President and Representative Director of Ichigo Estate Co., Ltd., shared the vision behind THE VILLAGE SAPPORO. He explained that the building was designed to help tenant companies connect naturally, creating opportunities for new business, collaboration, and co-creation. Together with WeWork, Ichigo Estate aims to bring a new community-driven office culture to Sapporo.

Keitaro Kumagai, Representative Director, President & CEO of WeWork Japan, then outlined WeWork’s three core strengths: inspiring workspaces, all-inclusive services that enable flexible growth, and community-driven collaboration.

Citing WeWork Japan’s approximately 3,000 annual events and 300 business matching opportunities, Kumagai shared his vision for WeWork THE VILLAGE SAPPORO as a central platform for co-creation,  connecting startups, enterprises, local governments, and regional partners in Sapporo with opportunities across Japan and beyond. He also announced plans to deepen collaboration with the City of Sapporo to accelerate startup creation and strengthen the local business community.

Katsuhiro Akimoto, Mayor of Sapporo, highlighted that Hokkaido and Sapporo are gaining attention not only for tourism and food, but also for emerging industries such as semiconductors and AI data centers.

He expressed his expectations for WeWork, stating, “Through WeWork’s global network and expertise in community building, we hope new value originating from Hokkaido and Sapporo will reach the world.”

He also referred to the partnership agreement signed between the City of Sapporo and WeWork Japan in November 2025, reaffirming the city’s commitment to supporting startups and regional revitalization.

The event also highlighted AI Foundation Community (AIFC), a project launched in April 2026 that combines WeWork Japan’s diverse business community with SoftBank’s startup support program, AI Foundation for Startups (AIFS). The initiative is designed to accelerate the growth of AI startups by connecting them with enterprises, local governments, and real-world implementation opportunities.

Kumagai explained that AIFC brings together SoftBank’s AI infrastructure and startup support with WeWork’s community network. By combining these strengths, AIFC helps startups access relationships and opportunities that are often difficult to build independently.

Kunimitsu Asanuma, Head of Next Generation Business Development at SoftBank Corp., introduced SoftBank’s growth strategy, “Activate AI for Society,” and discussed the development of AI data centers and GPU infrastructure in Tomakomai, Hokkaido.

Asanuma emphasized that building data centers alone is not enough. What matters is creating opportunities for companies and startups to actually use AI and implement it in society.

A panel discussion was held under the theme “The Power AI Startups and Communities Can Bring to Sapporo,” bringing together representatives from the City of Sapporo, SoftBank, and WeWork Japan.

Kazuya Kudo, Director of the Project Section, Economic Strategy Promotion Department, City of Sapporo, highlighted Hokkaido’s strategic advantages in the AI era, including renewable energy, vast land resources, AI data centers, and semiconductor-related industries. He positioned the region as a future hub for real-world AI adoption and new industry creation, also referring to its 2024 designation by the national government as a GX/AI Financial and Asset Management Special Zone.

Kudo also noted that approximately 300,000 square meters of new office supply is expected in central Sapporo over the next decade. He emphasized the importance of using these new office environments to attract startups, innovative companies, and new business opportunities to the city.

Asanuma discussed the importance of connecting AI infrastructure with real-world users and startups. He stated that communities like WeWork can help accelerate AI adoption and social implementation from Sapporo and Hokkaido.

Kumagai reiterated that “community is WeWork’s greatest value” and shared his vision of creating a center of co-creation in Hokkaido where startups, enterprises, local governments, and regional partners come together.

He also highlighted WeWork’s global network and diverse business relationships, explaining that startups can achieve greater scale through community connections than they could on their own.

The event concluded with remarks from Yuki Saito, entrepreneur, former professional baseball player, and WeWork member.

Saito introduced his ongoing project to create baseball fields designed for children, along with his broader community-building initiatives in Hokkaido. He said, “We want Hokkaido to become not only a destination for sports and tourism, but also a place where businesses can grow.” He also shared his hope that communities like WeWork will become hubs for new relationships, new opportunities, and new value emerging from Hokkaido.

The ceremony concluded with a commemorative first pitch. In a symbolic gesture, Saito, who has continued to take on new challenges in Hokkaido, passed the ball to Kumagai, representing WeWork Japan’s own new challenge in the region. The moment was met with enthusiastic applause from attendees.

Through WeWork THE VILLAGE SAPPORO, WeWork Japan aims to build a co-creation hub in Sapporo where startups, enterprises, local governments, and regional communities can connect, collaborate, and grow.

By deepening collaboration with the City of Sapporo and partner organizations, WeWork Japan will continue to create an environment where new ideas, innovation, and business opportunities can emerge from Hokkaido, supporting the growth of a startup ecosystem that connects Sapporo with Japan and the world.
