WeWork Japan Receives “Kurumin Certification” from the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare
Recognized for Building a Workplace Where Employees Can Confidently Balance Work and Childcare
WWJ Corp. (“WeWork Japan”*1), the operator of WeWork’s flexible office spaces in Japan, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the “Kurumin Certification”*2 by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan.
The Kurumin Certification is a government accreditation based on the Act on Advancement of Measures to Support Raising Next-Generation Children. It recognizes companies that actively promote workplace environments where employees can balance work and childcare. To qualify, companies must formulate a “General Employer Action Plan” and achieve certain outcomes within the designated plan period.
As a company that places strong emphasis on diverse working styles and employee well-being, WeWork Japan has introduced and enhanced various initiatives to support employees in balancing childcare and their careers. This certification reflects the progress and results of these initiatives during the action plan period.
■Key Initiatives by WeWork Japan
Under its action plan (April 1, 2022 – December 31, 2024), WeWork Japan set a goal of achieving a 30% paternity leave uptake rate for male employees and 100% maternity leave uptake rate for female employees. To achieve this, the company implemented a wide range of initiatives, including:
Strengthening Pre- and Post-Childcare Leave Support
- Conducted pre-leave support meetings to address concerns and questions before employees take childcare leave
- Supported flexible work arrangements after returning from leave, including access to a shortened working hours system aligned with individual work-life balance needs
Promoting Awareness and Understanding of Childcare Leave
- Hosted internal “Childcare Leave & Postpartum Paternity Leave Talk Sessions” to raise awareness of paternity leave and encourage flexible working arrangements for employees balancing childcare and work
Enhancing Internal Systems That Support Work–Life Balance
- Introduced a policy allowing employees to take paid leave from their first day of employment, supporting those navigating childcare, caregiving, or other life events
- Implemented a full-flex working system, enabling employees to work without constraints on time or location, thereby supporting childcare–work integration
Developing and Advancing the Action Plan
- Promoted continued improvement in policies and awareness throughout the organization under the goal of “creating a company culture where employees can fully demonstrate their abilities while balancing work and childcare”
